Parkinson’s Disorder (PD) is a progressive neurological condition that reduces the production or reception of the neurotransmitter Dopamine. The loss of this molecule in the brain causes changes to voluntary movement, involuntary movement, cognition and speech.
Initial symptoms include increased tremors of the upper and lower body, stiffness in the limbs and trunk, slowness of movement and problems with posture, balance and coordination. As the condition progresses individuals may have difficulties completing normal daily tasks of living such as writing, speaking and walking. Early management of these symptoms can maintain a good quality of life.
Some of the specific challenges associated with PD and walking are:
- Changing directions
- Walking in a crowded/narrow environment
- Initiating movements
- Decreased arm swing
- Bent over posture
As every individual with PD has different challenges and needs, the treatment plan for each individual varies. An individualized program will be created to meet one’s specific needs.
The potential outcomes of beginning a rehab program are:
- Increased flexibility and reduced rigidity
- Improved balance, coordination and fine motor skills
- Increased physical abilities such as walking, stairs
- Increased independence with activities of daily living
- Increased quality of life
As a neurological condition affects more than the physical body we have taken special considerations to accommodate all individuals’ needs, including:
- Appointment times scheduled around the timing of medications
- Access to home videos/exercise program progression
- Extra time to support mobility needs
- Ongoing support/feedback from your therapist
- Connection to community supports/group exercise classes
