Ankle & Foot Conditions

“Left foot. Right foot. / Feet. Feet. Feet.” The Foot Book - Dr. Seuss

Ankle and foot pain can be a result of a multitude of things such as from an injury like a sprain, tendonitis, fractures, poor mechanics and other medical conditions. Injuries and symptoms can occur from a range of activities such as gardening, sports, or abnormal foot and ankle structures.

Pain in this region of the body can be quite debilitating, often compromising your daily activities. Physiotherapy helps to reduce pain and improve function and mechanics.

Ankle and foot injuries – such as sprains, strains, or fractured bones – can happen at any age. This is a common condition for athletes but can happen to people with physically demanding careers or to someone who is enjoying an activity like playing with their kids or even an evening stroll.

Pain from injuries can occur from ligament tears, bone fractures, sprains, deformities, or other conditions (see below). Because symptoms are similar for these conditions and injuries, it’s best to consult a physiotherapist for diagnosis and treatment.

Symptoms: Ankle pain, foot or arch pain, heel pain, loss of flexibility, loss of joint function, loss of motion range, or pain when walking.

Plantar Fasciitis

A common cause of heel and sole of the foot pain is the condition known as plantar fasciitis. There are many causes of this including dysfunctional foot mechanics, obesity, overuse, and poor footwear.

Symptoms: Heel pain, pain in the heel while walking, sharp heel pain.

Sprains

This is a very common injury that can have long term consequences if not treated correctly. Rolling, twisting or turning your ankle beyond its normal range of motion can cause the ligaments that help hold your ankle bones together to be damaged, stretched or torn. Most sprained ankles involve injuries to the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle.

Symptoms:

Pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, restricted range of motion, popping sound at time of injury, difficulty weight bearing

Tendonitis

Caused by the inflammation of the tendons in the feet and ankles, often from overuse or poor foot mechanics, tendonitis is one of the more common conditions in this area of the body.   Pain will be noticeable during an activity, but then will subside after a period of rest.  Although the achilles tendon is often the source of tendonitis, other tendons around the ankle and foot can be injured as well.

Symptoms: Ankle pain, joint inflammation, point pain or tenderness, loss of flexibility in the ankle or foot, pain in foot or ankle after a period of inactivity, pain when walking.

COVID-19 SAFETY

Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture Clinic has protocols to ensure the utmost safety for our patients, team and community. We have worked hard to protect our public health during this pandemic. Medical masks are mandatory for all staff and patients to keep everyone safe, and we appreciate your commitment.

We continue to follow the guidelines and protective measures indicated by our regulatory boards and governments. Our team has also had extensive training on our new protocols, and we are all 100% committed to ensuring our patients’ safety.

This is the new normal.

All patients and staff will be screened before each visit. Unfortunately, anyone showing signs of respiratory infection will be unable to come into the clinic. We will encourage and book virtual physiotherapy appointments for those that need help but are symptomatic if a client is at greater risk or for anyone who is not comfortable coming into the clinic.

We have the highest standards for hand hygiene and cleaning. All equipment and rooms will be disinfected after each use, frequently touched surfaces will be sterilized, and personal protective equipment will be used in all appropriate situations. Patients and staff will have hand washing stations to ensure proper frequent hand hygiene.

We also understand that it is necessary to reduce the risk of transmission with physical distancing. To do this, we have installed plexiglass barriers, reduced the number of appointments available by spreading them out and designed an optimal patient flow that minimizes contact with other patients and staff before and after appointments. Our team is also committed to practicing these as measures of hand hygiene and physical distancing outside the clinic to be safe when they return to work.

Although it may seem different with the steps we need to take, the Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture team is still the same! We still believe in the same values and are here to provide an extraordinary physiotherapy experience. This is not going to change. Our goal is to keep all of us healthy and happy.

Our fabulous admin team is available to book in-clinic appointments now. Or if you prefer a virtual physiotherapy visit, we can book that too. Please call us at 250-545-2922 to book an appointment or if you would like more information.
