Elbows, Wrists & Hands

Turns out it's not all in the wrist.

Overview

Elbow, wrist and hand injuries are not only common for those active in sports like golf and tennis, but they often occur in people of all ages and activity levels. Our elbows, wrists and hands do a lot of work for us every day, and work together. When one of them fails, it sometimes will cause stress and fatigue on the others.  Therefore, it is very common to experience a multitude of injuries in these areas. Below are some of the more common injuries and conditions we treat.

Conditions & Injuries

Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow/Tendonitis

Tendonitis occurs when the tendons attached to the inside or outside of the elbow become irritated or inflamed. Although commonly associated with tennis, golfers can can experience this injury. It is also commonly seen with any type of repetitive motion, or incorrect ergonomics, such as a poor computer set-up.

Disc injuries at the wrist

The wrist has a structure called the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) that acts as a cushion between the bones. It is commonly injured when a person falls with their hands outstretched, does activities with repetitive motion, or experiences an injury from the hand or wrist being twisted.

Symptoms: Pain on the pinky side of your wrist, weakness, and a clicking or popping sensation with movement.

Sprains and strains of the fingers

The bones in our fingers are connected by ligaments. An extreme impact from a variety of sports and activities can cause a sprain in this region of the body. Falling onto your hand outside of sports or other activities can also cause this type of injury.

Arthritis of the wrist and finger joints

Wear and tear over time happens in the joints of our wrists and our fingers.  These are most often a result of previous injuries or fractures. It can also be caused by repetitive motions done while on the job. The joint at the base of the thumb is often affected and can lead to significant dysfunction and disability without treatment and protection.

Symptoms: Bony deformities, pain in the wrists or fingers, weakness in the wrists or fingers.

DeQuervains

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is an inflammation of the tendon and synovial sheath of the tendons that go to your thumb. This is a painful condition often resulting from activity relying on repetitive hand or wrist movement — such as working in the garden, playing golf or racket sports, or lifting your baby.

Symptoms: Difficulty with thumb movement, pain and swelling at the base of the thumb.

COVID-19 SAFETY

Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture Clinic has protocols to ensure the utmost safety for our patients, team and community. We have worked hard to protect our public health during this pandemic. Medical masks are mandatory for all staff and patients to keep everyone safe, and we appreciate your commitment.

We continue to follow the guidelines and protective measures indicated by our regulatory boards and governments. Our team has also had extensive training on our new protocols, and we are all 100% committed to ensuring our patients’ safety.

This is the new normal.

All patients and staff will be screened before each visit. Unfortunately, anyone showing signs of respiratory infection will be unable to come into the clinic. We will encourage and book virtual physiotherapy appointments for those that need help but are symptomatic if a client is at greater risk or for anyone who is not comfortable coming into the clinic.

We have the highest standards for hand hygiene and cleaning. All equipment and rooms will be disinfected after each use, frequently touched surfaces will be sterilized, and personal protective equipment will be used in all appropriate situations. Patients and staff will have hand washing stations to ensure proper frequent hand hygiene.

We also understand that it is necessary to reduce the risk of transmission with physical distancing. To do this, we have installed plexiglass barriers, reduced the number of appointments available by spreading them out and designed an optimal patient flow that minimizes contact with other patients and staff before and after appointments. Our team is also committed to practicing these as measures of hand hygiene and physical distancing outside the clinic to be safe when they return to work.

Although it may seem different with the steps we need to take, the Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture team is still the same! We still believe in the same values and are here to provide an extraordinary physiotherapy experience. This is not going to change. Our goal is to keep all of us healthy and happy.

Our fabulous admin team is available to book in-clinic appointments now. Or if you prefer a virtual physiotherapy visit, we can book that too. Please call us at 250-545-2922 to book an appointment or if you would like more information.
