Concussion Baseline Testing Vernon

If you are looking for a concussion management program, please visit our page here.

Are you involved in high risk activities, sports, or a profession that could result in a concussion? One of the best ways to ensure a solid path to recovery after a concussion occurs is to have a baseline test done prior to an injury.

Why? In order to know when an athlete, or a person in a high-risk profession, has fully recovered from a concussion, we first have to know their brain function when they were healthy. Otherwise, there is no way to truly know when a person has fully recovered and safe to return to their sport or work without this information.

Baseline testing is the most important thing to get done prior to your sports season every year, or before engaging in a high-risk job. By having your test results on file, we can compare your brain function before an injury occurs to the progress made during recovery to know when you have returned to full function.

The biggest concern surrounding concussions comes from the energy deficit that occurs in the brain following injury. When the brain is in this low energy state, it has been well established that it is extremely vulnerable to additional trauma. Even small impacts can lead to another concussion, often leading to severe brain injuries with potentially permanent or fatal outcomes.

The problem is that symptoms or how a person feels does not coincide with brain recovery. The only way to know when the brain has fully recovered and out of this “vulnerable period” is to compare current brain function to when the individual was healthy from the baseline test.

Baseline tests consist of measuring every area of brain function that could be potentially affected following a concussion. Setting this baseline is critical BEFORE an athlete gets injured. After that, it’s too late to receive the best care available.

Concussion Treatment and Management

If you have sustained a concussion, Easthill Physiotherapy can develop an individualized concussion management recovery plan for rehabilitation and treatment strategies. This is implemented based on the examination findings and, if a baseline test has previously been done, aimed at returning the client to their pre-injury measurements.

We are a certified concussion management clinic through the Complete Concussion Management Inc. (CCMI) organization. Our physiotherapists also collaborate with primary care physicians to help patients and athletes safely. You can learn more about CCMI and our concussion management program here.

Will my benefit plan cover the cost of a baseline test at Easthill Physiotherapy?

If you have personal insurance benefits that cover physiotherapy services, then yes, your plan will most likely cover the cost of the baseline test. We do encourage everyone to check with their providers to make sure they are covered.

COVID-19 SAFETY

Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture Clinic has protocols to ensure the utmost safety for our patients, team and community. We have worked hard to protect our public health during this pandemic. Medical masks are mandatory for all staff and patients to keep everyone safe, and we appreciate your commitment.

We continue to follow the guidelines and protective measures indicated by our regulatory boards and governments. Our team has also had extensive training on our new protocols, and we are all 100% committed to ensuring our patients’ safety.

This is the new normal.

All patients and staff will be screened before each visit. Unfortunately, anyone showing signs of respiratory infection will be unable to come into the clinic. We will encourage and book virtual physiotherapy appointments for those that need help but are symptomatic if a client is at greater risk or for anyone who is not comfortable coming into the clinic.

We have the highest standards for hand hygiene and cleaning. All equipment and rooms will be disinfected after each use, frequently touched surfaces will be sterilized, and personal protective equipment will be used in all appropriate situations. Patients and staff will have hand washing stations to ensure proper frequent hand hygiene.

We also understand that it is necessary to reduce the risk of transmission with physical distancing. To do this, we have installed plexiglass barriers, reduced the number of appointments available by spreading them out and designed an optimal patient flow that minimizes contact with other patients and staff before and after appointments. Our team is also committed to practicing these as measures of hand hygiene and physical distancing outside the clinic to be safe when they return to work.

Although it may seem different with the steps we need to take, the Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture team is still the same! We still believe in the same values and are here to provide an extraordinary physiotherapy experience. This is not going to change. Our goal is to keep all of us healthy and happy.

Our fabulous admin team is available to book in-clinic appointments now. Or if you prefer a virtual physiotherapy visit, we can book that too. Please call us at 250-545-2922 to book an appointment or if you would like more information.
