Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Vernon

What the heck is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy anyway?

Dysfunction with your pelvic floor is not a common topic of conversation. In fact, it’s a bit of an uncomfortable topic and many people suffer quietly without getting the treatment they need.

However, pelvic floor dysfunction is common and affects a wide range of people, from pregnant women to athletes.

The pelvic floor is a pretty important group of muscles that attach from the pubic bone to the tailbone and their function is essential to supporting our pelvic organs, like the bladder and uterus. Additionally, these muscles are crucial to our core stability.

When these muscles are too tight, lengthened, imbalanced or weak, a variety of issues can occur, causing symptoms such as incontinence, pain, IBS, sexual dysfunction and more. Additionally, a weak pelvic floor often is the culprit behind the back, hip or other joint pain.

The goal of physiotherapy for pelvic health conditions is to correct and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve their function with education, exercises, and manual physiotherapy treatments.

The good thing is that most conditions respond well to physiotherapy and can be managed and with education and individualized strategies you can get your pelvic floor working again.

Be Proactive!

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is also a fantastic preventative strategy. Not only can you learn great self-management tools, strengthen your pelvic floor but you can prevent symptoms by getting your pelvic floor fit and strong.

What to expect from a Pelvic Health Assessment and Treatment

You are in good hands with Chenoa Koke, our pelvic health physiotherapist.  Read her full bio here!

The first step will be a detailed history and conversation with Chenoa about your issues and symptoms so that she can clearly listen to and understand your concerns and collaborate with you on the best next steps.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can be complex, (and as we like to say, the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone….) and therefore multiple structures can be implicated like the lumbar spine and hip.  So, the next step is to do a physical assessment which will always include a look at the big picture to determine if the hip, lumbar spine or other structures may be involved.

An internal physical exam may or may not be necessary but this is your choice; you are always in the driver’s seat as far as this decision.

Split down the middle… How to deal with post-partum Diastasis Rectus

This occurs when the fibrous structure that connects the left and right rectus abdominal muscles called the linea alba, separates due to an inability of the muscle to stretch enough to accommodate a growing belly. This can cause a multitude of problems such as low back or pelvic pain, incontinence, weak low back muscles, as well as that all too common “mummy tummy”.   Read More »

COVID-19 SAFETY

Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture Clinic has protocols to ensure the utmost safety for our patients, team and community. We have worked hard to protect our public health during this pandemic. Medical masks are mandatory for all staff and patients to keep everyone safe, and we appreciate your commitment.

We continue to follow the guidelines and protective measures indicated by our regulatory boards and governments. Our team has also had extensive training on our new protocols, and we are all 100% committed to ensuring our patients’ safety.

This is the new normal.

All patients and staff will be screened before each visit. Unfortunately, anyone showing signs of respiratory infection will be unable to come into the clinic. We will encourage and book virtual physiotherapy appointments for those that need help but are symptomatic if a client is at greater risk or for anyone who is not comfortable coming into the clinic.

We have the highest standards for hand hygiene and cleaning. All equipment and rooms will be disinfected after each use, frequently touched surfaces will be sterilized, and personal protective equipment will be used in all appropriate situations. Patients and staff will have hand washing stations to ensure proper frequent hand hygiene.

We also understand that it is necessary to reduce the risk of transmission with physical distancing. To do this, we have installed plexiglass barriers, reduced the number of appointments available by spreading them out and designed an optimal patient flow that minimizes contact with other patients and staff before and after appointments. Our team is also committed to practicing these as measures of hand hygiene and physical distancing outside the clinic to be safe when they return to work.

Although it may seem different with the steps we need to take, the Easthill Physiotherapy + Acupuncture team is still the same! We still believe in the same values and are here to provide an extraordinary physiotherapy experience. This is not going to change. Our goal is to keep all of us healthy and happy.

Our fabulous admin team is available to book in-clinic appointments now. Or if you prefer a virtual physiotherapy visit, we can book that too. Please call us at 250-545-2922 to book an appointment or if you would like more information.
